Fat Transfer Procedure

While fat transfer was initially reported decades ago, only recently has the application of Autologous Fat Transfer/Fat Micro Grafting (using your own fat for transfer) been refined to achieve superior, natural looking and longer lasting results. Over the past decade, research on micro grafting techniques now affords patients the opportunity to benefit from fat transfer in many different areas.

Autologous Fat Transfer/Fat Micro Grafting involves removing some fat from another part of your body by liposuction, carefully preparing the fat for transfer and then re-injecting the fat into the area to be enhanced with meticulous micro grafting injection techniques. Smaller volume procedures, such as in the facial region, are often performed in the office utilizing local anesthesia. Larger areas for enhancement, such as Breast Augmentation, Buttock Augmentation and improvements to Breast Reconstructions/Lumpectomies, are performed in a surgery center setting, as an outpatient. The additional benefits of fat grafting is reducing other problem areas, with liposuction, while enhancing another with fat transfer.

The most common areas for Autologous Fat Transfer/Micro Grafting are Facial Rejuvenation, Breast Augmentation, and Buttock Augmentation. In patients with breast implants, fat grafting can be used to smooth the edges of the implant for a more natural graduated appearance of the breast. We can also correct breast irregularities, such as tubular breast deformity, breast asymmetry, and improve the appearance of Breast Reconstruction following Mastectomy and Lumpectomy. Dr. Papalian also uses Autologous Fat Transfer/Micro Grafting to correct liposuction irregularities in patients referred to him for correction.

Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation with implants is still the most common method for breast enlargement. However many women desire volume enhancement, possibly to replace the breast volume lost following pregnancy, but do not want breast implants. Fat Transfer/Micro Grafting Breast Augmentation for the appropriate candidate, may be the answer. Using your own fat for transfer, removed with liposuction from the abdomen, thighs or buttock, we are able to increase your breast fullness, naturally, without the need for implants. Breast augmentation with fat grafting not only results is a natural breast, but also improves body shape with liposuction.

Facial Rejuvenation

As we age, the youthful volume of our facial structures and skin is lost. Facial fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm serve as excellent volume replacement in localized areas where only a small amount of filler is needed. When larger volumes of filler are required, Autologous Fat Transfer/Micro Grafting can not only produce longer lasting results but can reduce the total cost to restore the entire youthful volume you are looking for. Patients can be dissatisfied with facial fillers, if enough volume (or the needed volume) is not used due to costs. Facial fillers purchased “By the Syringe” can be cost prohibitive when larger volumes are required. For patients requesting more extensive volume replacement with filler, using your own fat for transfer can be the answer.

Breast Reconstruction and Post Lumpectomy deformity refinement with Fat Transfer/ Fat Micro Grafting.

Following Breast reconstruction, either with implants or flap tissue, irregularities often persist. With the latest techniques in Autologous Fat Transfer/ Fat Micro Grafting, improvement in the appearance of breast reconstruction is now possible. Often patients with post-mastectomy reconstruction have contour irregularities, volume loss above the implant or just thin areas without any fat. Now, all of these areas can be improved with micro fat grafting. Fat transfer can soften the edges around the implant, improve tissue irregularities, and fill in the hollow below the clavicle.

Prior to the advances in autologous fat micro grafting, patient with irregularities following Breast lLumpectomy were asked to “live with the defect.” Fat transfer, in the appropriate patient can now improve the appearance following Lumpectomy.

Breast Reconstruction revision and fat grafting to improve the appearance of the econstructed breast or a Lumpectomy defect is a covered benefit by insurance plans. In addition, treatment of the opposite breast for symmetry in reconstruction is also a covered benefit. For almost all patients who have undergone Breast Reconstruction or Lumpectomy, Fat Transfer/Fat Micro Grafting techniques can improve your result, while also achieving the benefit of liposuction in problem areas.
